Dear Prospective Family,
As the admissions application deadline draws nearer, we've received an influx of inquiries and questions from our prospective students and their families. Rather than answer the questions from the perspective of our admissions officers, we decided we'd go directly to the source: Midland students themselves!
So if you're on the fence about Midland, trying to get a better understanding of our programs, or simply just curious to hear from a student's perspective, this email is for you! Below, our students respond to some of our most frequently asked questions.
I hope you enjoy, and please let me know if there are any specific questions you have for our students. We'll be continuing to share student and faculty answers to frequently asked questions throughout the upcoming weeks via email and on social media, and it's likely your question is shared by many of our families. If you have a more specific question, I'm also happy to connect you with a student directly.
Warmly,
Cierra Ensign Director of Admissions & Financial Aid
P.S. Our application deadline is fast approaching on February 15th, 2021! Start your application here.
Real talk: What's it like to be at school without your cell phone?
“It was an adjustment at first to live without a cell phone but now I absolutely love it. It allows me to be more present with my friends and faculty on campus and allows me to live in the moment. I am able to enjoy the little things throughout my day without any distractions. It also allows me to think critically with academics because you don't always have Google in your back pocket. It is one of my favorite things about Midland.” -Kate ’23
“I LOVE it. It feels so good to get away from the constant need to look at my phone or reply to texts and the pressure of social media. It allows for very genuine, uninterrupted relationships.” -Daniella ’21
"I do not miss my phone at all. I constantly forget that I have one... You have friends all around, so why would you want it to distract you?" - Gillian '23
"It is amazing. At first, I was a little nervous I would be missing out on everything going on at home but that is not the case. We are able to go on the Instagram website and use the landlines to call whoever we want. The main benefit of it is that without the influence of phones, I have made some of the best friends I've ever had." - Mallory '22
“I enjoy not having a phone, it allows us to build better connections with one another. For me too it helps me "escape" from the outside world and focus on what's in front of me instead.” -Pearl ’22
Roommates: the good, the bad and (sometimes) the best friend ever. What has your roommate experience been like?
"My roommate experience has been great so far. I enjoy having someone to talk to when I’m bored, as well as someone to help me with things such as an assignment or when setting things up for the first time. It’s also nice to have someone right with you to talk about your experience that they too are going through." - David ’24
Having a roommate is one of my favorite parts of Midland. You get to know one other person on such an individual and personal level, sharing space and growing together. You can have dance parties at night, or read books together on rainy days. For me, my roommate is both one of my closest friends, and a mutual support system. - Melia ’21
"Living in a cabin with a roommate is such a unique and fun experience. Your roommate is the first person you see when you wake up and the last person you see before you go to bed every night. You become so close to your roommate so quickly because you work together so often. Lighting fires, helping each other with homework, decorating your cabin, all teaches valuable lessons on how to enjoy living with another person. Your roommate will become your family before you know it!" - Kate ’23
"Having a roommate is super fun! I thought that my roommate and I would divide our room in half and pretend the other doesn't exist most of the time. But we share pretty much everything and haven't gotten sick of each at all! One time, my roommate stole my only pair of clean sweat pants and I was walking around in athletic shorts in the freezing cold before I noticed she was wearing them. I then chased her around our quad barefoot and tackled her. We laughed hysterically for a while after that. That's probably the most accurate description my roommate experience!" - Alison ’24
